Abuja—Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said weekend, that there might be no
urgent need to evacuate Nigerians in South Sudan due to the crisis in
the country.
Onyeama, who stated this while briefing newsmen on the just concluded
African Union, AU, meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, said Nigerians in South
Sudan had returned to their businesses.
The minister, who noted that the Federal Government did not abandoned
Nigerians, as claimed by some persons on social media, said there was no
immediate threat to the lives of Nigerian citizens in the place.
He said: “As you know, we have a large number of Nigerians in South
Sudan who, when fighting broke out, took refuge in the Nigerian embassy
and there were calls for evacuation because one or two countries had
evacuated their citizens.
“We took certain steps in the ministry, we got in touch with National
Security Adviser and the Ministry of Defence to explore the options of
evacuating some of our citizens And, of course, we are also in touch
with the Nigerian embassy in the country.”
Onyeama said there was relative calm and peace in the country due to
ceasefire agreed upon by the warring parties.
